Meest gestelde vragen over waterstofgeneratoren

1. Is using a hydrogen generator safe?

Yes. The hydrogen generator stores less than 300ml at low pressure. A cylinder can store up to 6500 liters at high pressure. Parker Hannifin gas generators produce only what the Gas Chromatograph (GC) consumes and automatically stop if a pressure loss is detected. The hydrogen generator will also alarm and/or stop if the demand exceeds the generator's capacity, if the pressure increases within the generator, or if there is a leak in the generator.

2. Do I need to ventilate my GCs?

No. All the hydrogen that comes out of the GC will quickly dissolve into the air. The Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) of hydrogen is 4%, and it is almost impossible to reach this level in a normal laboratory environment.

3. Do I need a hydrogen sensor in my lab?

No. The amount of hydrogen released into the lab from an uncorrected leak is never enough to reach the LEL value of hydrogen. The LEL value of hydrogen is 4%, and it is nearly impossible to reach this level in a normal laboratory.

4. Do I need a hydrogen sensor in the GC oven?

No. Many new GCs are equipped with sensors inside the oven. However, GC ovens are not airtight, so hydrogen buildup within the GC is unlikely. If in doubt, always contact your GC supplier.

5. Are hydrogen generators difficult to use and maintain?

No. Maintenance of a hydrogen generator is easy and cost-effective. Fill the water reservoir weekly/biweekly or opt for the automatic filling function. Avilo offers preventive maintenance, which can be arranged via a contract or on an on-call basis. Choosing Avilo ensures that the technician is trained by the manufacturer to maintain the hydrogen generator. You can also contact Avilo for questions about the maintenance of your hydrogen generator(s).

6. How many GCs can a hydrogen generator run?

This depends entirely on the consumption of the GCs and the size of the generator. Hydrogen generators are available in various capacities. Therefore, the consumption of the GCs and the capacity of the generator can be well matched. Contact Avilo for assistance and advice.

7. What are the advantages of a hydrogen generator compared to cylinders?

  • The gas from a generator is of more consistent quality and pressure.
  • The results of an analysis with a generator are more reliable and reproducible.
  • A cylinder is always empty at the wrong time; a hydrogen generator produces continuously.
  • A generator is much safer because:
    - Hydrogen is produced at low pressure, not 200 bar.
    - Built-in leak sensors monitor production and automatically shut down the generator in case of complications.
    - On-demand production means little to no hydrogen needs to be stored.
  • A generator is an investment that pays for itself.
  • Less logistics, administration, and costs associated with cylinders.
  • Using a generator is less environmentally burdensome than gas from gas cylinders.

8. What purity of water do I need for a hydrogen generator to work?

Parker Hannifin hydrogen generators require deionized water with a purity of 1 megohm or better. If DI water is not available, use the Hydrogen Mate DI water system processor.
